After spending 70 some odd years in his clan’s special defense unit and another 18 years in the infirmary Kilrak Stonebender decided it was finally time to hang up his boots. As the days draw near to his retirement all he can look forward to is sitting in his nice cozy chair next to a fire, drinking some very strong ale and smoking his pipe. After a long and lavish ceremony he leaves the armory and heads home, head held high. Proud that he had served his clan well, fought bravely and saved many souls. It is such a bitter sweet day for him, he’s leaving the only thing he has known to enjoy a life of peace and quiet. To lounge around with his loving wife and walk the halls telling stories to any youngster that would happen to pass.
And so it happened exactly the way he had dreamed. Except he could not get over the longing to be out there, deep in the pits or high on the mountain side along side friends he considers brothers, defending his home and tending to the wounded. He doesn’t have the heart to tell his wife, she would only worry about him. Soon nightmares come to him. He can’t sleep, he’s restless all the time. He feels as if something bad is approaching and he can do nothing about it. So he spends his time in prayer and meditation and going back to the infirmary to teach the kids how to tend to wounds.
Years pass, living a life that is not what he wants but he thinks he needs. In his mind he is still out there protecting the helpless and caring for the wounded. Sadly as it happens to all dwarves, his wife of over 100 years fell ill and passed one long and lonely night. He mourns her for many months, rarely leaving his bed chambers. Again these dreams come deep in the night and the feeling that something bad is going to befall his people. Years ago he assumed it was just getting old and fearing for his wife’s health that brought on this feeling. But here it is still, something needs to be done.
He is not sure if he can do it though, he’s been retired for almost 6 summers and is feeling the age creep into his joints. Weeks pass as he starts to ready himself for his final tour of duty. He knows it, almost feels it in his bones that this is what he was born from the mountain to do. Rigorous training in private. No one is to know of the journey he is about to embark on. Sleepless nights and long days of getting back into fighting form stretch into weeks, then months.
It takes him longer than he had expected to feel ready. The feeling is getting stronger, as if being pulled by the riptide of fate. He is convinced this is the path that he is to walk, the life of the protector / healer. He is ready in mind, body and spirit. He knows not where to go or who will accompany him on this treacherous endeavor. All he knows is that war is brewing and he will not sit idle and watch it happen.
It is time to fight!
